About Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area

Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area

The Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area encompasses the waters surrounding the small archipelago of Lampedusa, Linosa, and the tiny Lampione islet, located between Sicily and North Africa in the central Mediterranean Sea. Covering an extensive area of marine and coastal ecosystems, this protected zone preserves some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean, along with seagrass beds, rocky reefs, and sandy bottoms. These habitats support a rich biodiversity, including endangered sea turtles such as the loggerhead (Caretta caretta), bottlenose dolphins, numerous species of fish, and rare invertebrates. The islands’ volcanic origins also contribute to unique underwater formations favored by divers and marine biologists alike. Historically, the Pelagie Islands have served strategic maritime roles, with their sparse human population focusing on fishing and tourism. Conservation efforts became formalized in 2002, aiming to balance human use with preservation.

Visitors to the area usually engage in snorkeling and scuba diving to explore vibrant underwater landscapes, spotting Mediterranean fan corals, groupers, and sometimes migrating whales. The islands themselves provide rugged coastline hikes and birdwatching, especially during migration seasons when numerous seabirds visit. Lampedusa is the most developed island, offering eco-friendly facilities and boat operators for guided marine tours. The protected area appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking unspoiled marine environments combined with cultural authenticity and quiet island charm.
